The newest research is in.   Dr  Larry Hirshberg of Brown University reviews neurofeedback in Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics, "According to the reviewers, these studies demonstrated that 70-80% of participants benefited from (Neurofeedback)... somewhat equal to that of stimulants for the treatment of ADHD symptoms".   summary and chapter.  (PDF file is a bit slow)

"We used to think that we couldn’t control autonomic responses like  heart-rate, blood pressure…things like   that.  But we now know that these responses are subject to...voluntary control.  Biofeedback has shown that.                                                   Bill Moyers

NASA trains astronauts with EEG Biofeedback to improve attention and alertness while in space.  The US Olympic Team trains athletes with general biofeedback and EEG biofeedback to improve performance.

"Biofeedback techniques (using monitoring instruments) provide patients with physiological information that allows them to reliably influence psychophysiological responses... The evidence is strong for the effectiveness of this class of techniques (relaxation and biofeedback) in reducing chronic pain in a variety of medical conditions.  Biofeedback (was) found to be effective in alleviating insomnia."

"Improved electronic instruments … convey information to patients about their autonomic nervous systems and their muscles in the form of audio and visual signals that patients can understand. A therapist can then give suggestions and instructions to help you make the changes needed to learn more control of your body. Biofeedback shows you and your therapist which strategies work…"

...EEG Biofeedback Therapy should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas. In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally accepted and widely-used.      Frank Duffy, MD

Biofeedback provides a link between...involuntary process in your body and your senses, so that you can learn to bring that process under voluntary control... I often recommend it (biofeedback) for migraine, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, (and) chronic intestinal problems..."   Andrew Weil, MD

"... new brain wave analysis techniques like quatitative electroencephalograms will help experts more clearly document the neurologic and behavioral nature of ADHD, paving the way for better understanding and treatment.
